Back in November 2022, it was confirmed that BBC is to switch off Freesat standard definition channels on Freesat by 31st March 2024. Freesat SD will notify users if not already with information regarding this and this has spurred speculation in terms of the future of Freesat with doubts also being cast about Freesat maintaining their spots in Satellite distribution. Does this mean that we may see Freesat being removed completely in the future? What impact would these changes have upon subscription-free TV and what are the major threats to Freesat in the future? We investigate in this article.

What Are the Main Threats to Freesat?

Should Freesat not be renewed in terms of transmissions then this could mean that Freesat would potentially cease to exist. The major threat that is posed to both Freesat and Freeview is subscription-based platforms but Freeview and Freesat also sit well within subscription-based systems because of the following reasons:

  • Freeview and Freesat let you ‘opt-in’ to streaming services alongside being able to enjoy the most popular and by far most watched channels and shows.
  • Smart TVs easily integrate platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Twitch, YouTube, Disney+, Discovery + and other streaming platforms alongside enjoying Freeview & Freesat
  • Freesat and Freeview is completely free and still show the most popular television shows and shows that are available. People are looking to cut down on costs from subscription-based services so you are able to customise your viewing experience and choose the shows that you want to watch.

Will Satellite TV Change?

At least for the foreseeable future, you will still be able to enjoy your Freesat experience apart from the BBC changes that we mentioned at the start of this article. It’s highly unlikely that we will see major changes but it is interesting to see just how much viewing habits have changed over the past 10 to 15 years.

Streaming services will always pose a threat to free and subscription-based TV services and we’ve already seen noticeable declines in the Millenial and Gen Z generations in terms of their absorption and viewership in terms of terrestrial or satellite television.

This means that this may have an effect but it will be interesting to see if this continues to have an effect on the programmes that are available or the mediums of media that become more and more popular in the future. Satellite and terrestrial TV viewership is still highly strong so we will continue to monitor this topic and keep you updated if any updates come up over the next 6 to 12 months.
