1. Grease (1978)

Starting things off with the classic “Summer Loving” Grease is a classic that will certainly put you in that summer mood. With idyllic scenes set in Australia as well as classic scenes of the 1950s in America – it’s impossible not to get excited for summer with this classic.

Fun Fact – Although being the iconic name of the film, Grease is actually never mentioned in the entire film! Only ‘greased’ is mentioned in the song ‘Greased Lightnin.’

2. The Lion King (1994)

Although not strictly a summer film, The Lion King is a classic that all of the family can enjoy. The films setting in the Plains of Africa demonstrates the heat and harshness as well as the beauty of the plains. This is a great setting to prepare for some hopefully wonderful weather! If you have been following our previous articles, Disney + has been recently released in the UK which allows you to watch all of your favourite Disney classics.

Fun Fact – The Lion King was the first original story created by Disney. It is also the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated feature film of all time, with a total box office gross of over $986m!

3. Jaws (1975)

Although this film might keep you away from the water, this is still a thriller that is worthy of our summer list. Set in the sleepy quiet island of Amity, chaos ensues when rumours of a giant great white are reported across the island. Although this kept one out of the water for a while, the summer scenes and beach town pose for some great summer scenes albeit some thrillers and terrifying moments to keep you on your toes.

Fun Fact – The animatronic shark used for the rare scenes in which you actually see the shark weighed a whopping 1.2+ tonnes and was 25 feet in length! The shark was in fact so heavy that it sunk to the bottom of the ocean floor in early production.

4. Mamma Mia! (2008)

A cheesy addition to our list, Mamma Mia features a star-studded cast covering many of ABBA’s classics. Most of the filming was filmed on the gorgeous island of Skopelos which is the perfect location for a summer holiday. The inexperienced singing was a hit for some viewers but drew mixed reviews from critics but this is another fantastic film for all of the family.

Fun Fact – The opening weekend for Mamma Mia! Saw a record-setting $27.6, a new record for movie musicals beating Hairspray by a narrow £0.2.
